Johnson Urama , Ph.D
PROFESSOR and DIRECTOR
Prof. Johnson Urama is a Professor of Astrophysics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Currently, he is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, and the Director of International Collaborations. Before the current appointment, he had served as the Director, Academic Planning Unit as well as the Director, Quality Assurance Unit of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He was the pioneer Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, Federal University, Ndufu–Alike, Ikwo (sabbatical position) and two time Head, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He has also served in very many Committees of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, such as: Member, University Appraisals Committee; Member, Senate Curriculum Committee; Member, University of Nigeria Postgraduate Board and Chairman, Faculty of Physical Sciences Postgraduate Committee. He was a Guest Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona, USA where he taught the course AST 201: Introduction to Indigenous Astronomy (Class delivered through the Internet).
Prof. Urama obtained B.Sc (Hons.) in Physics and Astronomy of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with an award as the best graduating student of the Department in 1986. He also holds an M.Sc (Theoretical Solid State Physics) and Ph.D (Astrophysics) of the same University. He received the Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate award for the best graduating Doctoral (Ph.D) student in the Faculty of Physical Sciences (1999). His Ph.D research was largely carried out in South Africa where he spent two years (1997 – 1999) at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO). He has also held a number of Research Fellowships, some of which are: Visiting Research Fellow, HartRAO, South Africa (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004); CAS–TWAS Fellowship, Urumqi Astronomical Observatory, China (2006); Visiting Scientist, SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research (2008); C V Raman Research Fellow, National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, India (2011); and Visiting Professor, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. (2015)
Prof. Urama is the Coordinator, African Cultural Astronomy Project; Member, International Astronomical Union; Fellow, Astronomical Society of Nigeria; Member, American Institute of Physics, among many others.
